Sayed Haider Raza (1922–2016) was a legendary pioneer of Indian modern art and a co-founder of the influential Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group. While his early career in France focused on fluid expressionist landscapes, his style evolved dramatically in the 1970s toward deep geometric abstraction. He deeply integrated Indian cosmological philosophies into his canvas, most iconically through the Bindu—a dark, concentrated circle representing the cosmic center of energy and rebirth. His masterfully structured paintings brilliantly utilize vibrant primary colours to explore themes of nature, mapping out the five core elements known as Panchatatva. Raza spent decades living and working in Paris before returning permanently to India in his later years. Today, his deeply spiritual masterpieces are celebrated globally, commanding record-breaking prices at international auctions. He remains immortalized as one of the most decorated and influential modern masters in South Asian art history.
