Laxman Aelay

Born in 1965, Laxman was brought up in Kadirenigudem. Laxman completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts, JNAFAU, Hyderabad. He observed the drought stricken rural life while growing up, which had a deep impact on his paintings.

Laxman’s paintings trace their roots back to his hometown of Kadirenigudem in Telangana. Similar to the people of his village, his paintings are simple yet colourful and absolutely beautiful. His colour palette consists of earth toned hues of red, green and yellow. For his monochromatic paintings, the artist paints the entire background in a single tone of a rustic red, yellow ocher or mellow green. On this subtle setting, we see absolutely stunning sketches of people; men, women and children, of the village chit-chatting and living their daily lives. Though he doesn’t use many colours, he plays with texture in his paintings. Laxman draws various designs on the women’s sarees, such as flowers and polka dots, along with other patterns, and changes the patterns of stripes and checks among the men’s clothing.

Recently, the artist has dived into the world of colour. Though this art has graduated from monochromatic to colour, the beauty and simplicity in Laxman’s paintings have stayed the same. In a way, these paintings would remind one of the portraits of the royalties and affluents in the middle ages. However, in his paintings, Laxman captures the daily lives of the people, from his hometown.

Laxman has conducted numerous group and solo shows and is a well known artist both in India and outside.
