Murali Lahoti

Murali Lahoti is a highly distinguished Indian painter and mural artist based in Maharashtra, celebrated for bridging the gap between traditional canvas painting and complex architectural murals. Born into a traditional agricultural family in Parli Vaijnath with no history in the creative arts, he famously defied his family’s severe opposition to his career choice by running away to Pune with just eleven rupees in his pocket. He supported himself by working as a street food waiter and commercial sign painter to fund his education, ultimately earning diplomas in Fine Arts and Commercial Arts from Pune’s renowned Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya by 1971. Over a prolific career spanning several decades, Lahoti became widely recognized for his immense versatility, mastering conventional oil on canvas alongside massive three-dimensional mural installations. He pioneered the artistic use of diverse, non-traditional materials such as sand, ceramics, fiber, glass, and Plaster of Paris.

Driven by a philosophy that true art comes from absorbing physical experiences in nature rather than looking at screens, Lahoti’s unique style combines rhythmic, lyrical line-work with rich, evocative textures. His extensive portfolio is best known for its stylized depictions of serene riverside village life, local working-class women, spiritual icons like Lord Ganesha, and cosmic abstract themes. A monumental figure in the contemporary Indian art scene, he has held over 125 solo exhibitions and 115 group showcases globally, earning prestigious honours including the Veteran Artist Award from the State of Maharashtra in 2006 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation in 2015. Today, he continues to passionately mentor emerging creators, advocating for the timeless discipline of daily sketching while his valuable masterpieces remain highly sought after by global collectors and international auction houses.
